Why Reading Is Essential to the Christian Life

I love books! One primary reason I love books is because the more I study God the deeper my affections grow for Him. As I observe the books that line my shelves I see old friends who have helped through difficult trials or guided me along the road as I have wrestled with deep theological questions that I couldn’t find answers to. As Descartes once said “the reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest minds.” I have found this to be so true in my life.

You may not think of yourself as much of a reader. There are many who find the act of reading to be a tedious and exhausting task. Although reading does not come naturally to everyone, I do believe that reading is a necessity for the Christian. The culmination of glorifying God, the purpose for why we exist  on this earth, is enjoying Him. If we are to truly enjoy Him, we must not settle for mere emotionalism. The joy that is truly enduring is joy that is found only in having true views of who God truly is, not who we’ve imagined him to be. Therefore, reading and studying and thinking about God are extremely important.

It is my hope and prayer that, as you join us on this blog, we can encourage you in sharing a love for the written word. But even more than that, that your love for words would be far exceeded by your love for who those words are about.

Since books are so important to the authors of Citizen’s Press, we decided to create a Recommended Reading List for you. We hope that this list can help you navigate through some of life’s most challenging questions and bring you to a place of loving and adoring your savior more than ever before.
