As I settled into my seat on the flight home from The Gospel Coalition Women’s National Conference my heart felt greatly refreshed yet still unsatisfied. Rather than leaving me full it left me wanting more. I came with an appetite for good teaching. The conference completely satisfied that. But the conference also developed a new appetite within me for a different kind of fare. I headed home with an increasing desire for God’s Word. I was left hungry.
Hunger is a sensation that all of us can relate to in some degree, which is why the hunger motif is used throughout Scripture to describe someone who needs more of God’s Word. This sensation was not new to me. I have felt this way many times before.
The deep hunger pangs that arise from my heart should compel me to love, treasure, and devour God’s Word. However, I will often settle for shallow, hollow, spiritual refreshments rather than the rich feast of God’s Word that He has invited me to indulge in.
This time I did not want to settle for less. At the same time I felt ill-equipped. I longed for tools to help me learn how to appreciate the fare I desired. I didn’t want to just taste, I wanted to be satisfied.
At the conference I had purchased a new book written by one of the speakers, Jen Wilkin, called Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds. I settled into my seat on the plane and cracked open the first page. I didn’t take my nose out of the book until I had finished it cover to cover, just minutes before our plane landed.
Wilkin’s book left me hungry but it also pointed to where and how I could receive the nourishment that I so greatly needed. Since that flight I have referenced this book often and used it as a tool to delve the depths of God’s Word in a new and deeper way.
I loved this book so much that I wanted to share it with our readers. I was able to sit down with Jen last week and I’m so excited to share with all of you what she had to say. I hope you enjoy and I hope that you will be encouraged to read His Word as well.
Since we love this book so much we will be giving away a free copy of Women of the Word to one of our readers. If you would like to enter just leave a comment on this page and let us know why you would appreciate reading this book. We will announce a winner on Monday.
